Personal Insurance

Car insurance

Automobile insurance is often taken for granted.  Most drivers request “full coverage” which usually means liability and physical damage coverage.  But, too often important coverages such as rental reimbursement and towing and labor or not requested and are not included.  Automobile coverage includes:

Liability: This is the portion of a policy that everyone needs—the part that protects you for damage caused to property (a vehicle or otherwise) or bodily injury or death to a person if you're at fault in an accident.

Collision: This portion helps pay for damage to your own vehicle in an accident. Rates are based largely on vehicle type and age.

Other than collision: Pays for physical damage that  results from incidents other than collisions, including storms, vandalism and theft.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: What if you're involved in an accident with a person who has no insurance, or whose policy pays only a pittance to the injured party? With this coverage, you're more likely to wind up with a realistic payout.

Medical Payments: Covers medical treatment for bodily injury in an accident, for you and your vehicle's occupants. If you have adequate hospitalization insurance, this might not be necessary—but check your existing coverage before deciding.

Personal injury protection: This coverage is more comprehensive than medical payments and includes such protection as loss of wages and funeral expenses.

Collision and other than collision coverage typically have deductibles—the amount that you agree to pay on your own before the insurance policy "kicks in." High deductibles translate to lower premium rates, because you're transferring part of the risk to yourself.

Homeowner insurance

Including primary residences, summer homes, waterfront property, apartments and condominiums.

Plumbing leaks. Water heater disasters. Tree roots in the sewer line. Frozen water lines. Disconnected washer hoses. All of these problems cause millions of dollars in damages to Texas homes each year, including the cost to tear out and replace floors, walls, and yards in order to access the problems. Are these losses covered under your current Policy? Gone are the days when companies sold only one kind of homeowner policy. After the mold crisis of 2001-2002, many companies amended their policies to restrict or exclude water related related claims. Are you covered? Call me for a policy analysis.
